Gao Fenfen watched her new neighbours from across the street. They were just moving in. Boxes everywhere.
They were foreign, that was for sure. She wasn’t sure what kind of foreign they were though. The hairy big-nosed giants all looked pretty much the same.
She sighed. Shanghai was always being overrun by laowai. They’d been coming in droves for over a century now, almost none of them bothering to learn to speak Mandarin, much less Shanghaihua.
She briefly considered going over to say hello but she knew they’d just stare at her blankly and spout some foreign gibberish.
She went back to her knitting.
